Description

Injustice and racial inequality are centuries-old problems. While progress has been made, the fact remains there’s plenty of work still to be done. As a cultural anthropologist, Tomiko Shine has dedicated her life to disrupting the U.S.’s criminal justice system. Her mission is to shine a light on the glaring disparities heavily affecting incarcerated African Americans and creating a little “uncomfortability” to disrupt the system and drive systemic change. As the Founding Director of the Aging People in Prison Human Rights Campaign, Tomiko address why while growing up “success was white,” how to achieve balance through disruption, and why we must continue breaking down boundaries to dismantle structures of oppression.
