The expansion draft, protected lists, and teams trading for protection from the expansion draft have all been a big topic of controversy recently. With the NWSL Expansion draft coming up quickly, teams were scrambling to determine their protected lists or make deals.
The Current made a deal with Bay FC to send Alex Loera there in exchange for allocation money and protection. Then Utah acquired Kate Del Fava, the Current's first-round pick and Kansas City received protection and $75, 000 in allocation money.
