This week: The Money Dance
Do you fight about money with your spouse? It is one of the most common points of contention in relationships.
Make sure you and your spouse know what kind of financial background they grew up with. Habits and expectations are founded here.
The stress of paying for college is a big trigger. Learn how Seth turned his parents’ stress over his college tuition into a positive.
Differing views on what is affordable and what is a need vs. a want.
Compromise. Compromise. Compromise. If one spouse is conservative with money and the other is not. Find a comfortable middle ground.
Your view on money needs to be centered in respect for your spouse. Respect will lead to more understanding on your personal finances, and hopefully less arguments.
Oftentimes, where you spend your money is where you place your values. What you spend money on is what you value most. Value your time over cooking? You probably order takeout a lot.
Save vs spend? Just because you can technically afford something, does that mean you should buy it? What returns would you have if chose to invest that money? Discuss with your spouse and see what would mean more in the end.
Schedule regular meetings to discuss your finances. You both need to have a good understanding of where you are and where you are going. Learn to be financial partners!
Identify your role in any financial problem and make a plan to address it.
Remember to stay calm, don’t blame, and be open minded to how your partner feels.
