This week: Helping Children Deal With Social Stress

The most important thing you can do to help your kid get through social stress is to be a safe and comforting place to come home to.

Push your child to join a group or sport or club at school.

There will always be social stress and conflict, no matter how many friends they have.

Some groups of friends are inclusive and some are exclusive. Your child needs to decide what kind of group they want to join.

If your child is in groups and has friends, but you still see issues, look at their social skills.

Model behavior of how to interact and be inclusive when engaging with others.

Social skills start in infancy, and go all the way through adulthood. Social skills include in-person interaction, online, and on the phone. Make sure kids know proper etiquette.

Build confidence in your child by helping them create a good story about themselves that they say to themselves and believe.

Dealing with conflicts will help them to develop problem solving skills.

Don’t project your needs and experiences on your children.

Help your kids to diversify types of friends and where they come from in their daily lives.

Don’t assume that your child is being inclusive or included. Ask questions.

Try to be in tune with how their friends interact with your kids.
