[EPISODE] From Freelancer To Scalable Business Owner

This week I'll sit down with NYC music industry veteran, Josh Margolis, and retrace the steps of his path from freelance musician, to becoming the founder of the Gowanus Music Club. We'll discuss the transition from "owning" your own job, to running a scalable business.

 

Segment 1

Jeremiah opens up with a quote about how entrepreneurs become entrepreneurs to serve/help people. Jeremiah then introduces his guest of the week, musician, Josh Margolis. In regards to the quote, the gentlemen began to talk about Social Entrepreneurship. Josh mentions a book he read in which he learned that running a business should also include a culture of happiness. The conversation continues with a discussion about making your staff happy at all times. The gentlemen both agree that when you have happy employees, they work happy, and that translates into happy customers/clients. 

 

Segment 2

This segment opens with a song from Josh Margolis. Josh talks about how the track came together. He then talks about his upcoming shows and where we can find tickets. Josh goes back and discusses the track, what it’s about and the importance of it. Next, Josh talks about his upbringing which included his sisters, musical influences, and his parents. Josh talks about one of his biggest musical influences as a child. He also believes that when you are younger, you are more receptive and open to new things. The segment ends with Josh talking about how his parents gave him his creative edge. 

 

Segment 3

We open with another track from Josh. Josh talks about the track, the writers, and the production. He talks about his music program, Gowanus Music Club. The GMC program has been around for 14years. The program teaches kids about composing music, writing music, and music production. Josh talks of how once he had his daughter, he realized he wanted to do more with his life. He then got an opportunity to teach a child how to play drums. From then on, he eventually founded to GMC. He says he had to get out of his comfort zone in order to succeed. He talks of how the realization of wanting to do more, made him also want to help people. For Josh, music is amazing, however, helping others is a bigger reward. 

 

Segment 4

The conversation picks right up by both guys discussing how they “fell backwards” into their life of entrepreneurship. Both guys talk about raising their kids in Brooklyn. The guys begin to talk about things they have in common; which includes playing the drums. Josh believes drums can be an outlet for so many emotions. Jeff believes that playing the drums can be healing. Josh ends the segment by informing the audience about the future of GMC and upcoming programs/shows.In the long term future he wants to create a music label and have his student’s music playing on major streaming platforms.
