John 4:28-30, 39-42 NASB
28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?” 30 They left the city and were coming to Him. 39 Now from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this
One truly is the Savior of the world.”

BIG IDEA for the Series: There is more to church and there is more to me.
1. What is a Wayfinder? (John 4:28-29 NASB)
A person willing to say come and see.
John 4:28-29 NASB
28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?”
One who testifies.
John 4:39 NASB
“…because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.”
That’s one of the values of our church: The Journey of Discovery
"Many decisions are not true spiritual conversions; they are only the beginning of a journey of seeking God... many people come to full faith through a process of mini-decisions... evangelism programs, grafted onto a church that is unable to embrace and support inquirers and doubters, cannot do the job."
- Tim Keller in Center Church
The journey of discovery:
o Interruption – something unexpected happens outside my control.
o Ignorance – the unexpected exposes what I don’t know.
o Information – new facts are brought to my attention that I could not have understood before the interruption.
o Insight – I gain wisdom from newfound facts.
o Inspiration – I find a sense of deep meaning that propels me forward.
This Woman becomes a Wayfinder because of:
o Interruption – (John 4:7)
o Ignorance – (John 4:10-15)
o Information – (John 4:16-24)
o Insight – (John 4:25-26)
o Inspiration – (John 4:28-29)
2. Who can be a Wayfinder? (John 4:17-18, 29)
John 4:17-18, 29 NASB
17 The woman answered and said to Him, “I have no husband.” Jesus *said to her, “You have correctly said, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; this which you have said is true.” 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?”
Who can be a Wayfinder?
People followed Jesus because of her testimony
3. When do I act as a Wayfinder? (John 4:28-29 NASB)
John 4:28-29 NASB
28 So the woman left her waterpot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?”
We act as a Wayfinder WHEN we discover deeper satisfaction in Jesus than we ever found in the stuff we held on to.
As soon as we learn something that the people we know need to know too.
4. Where do I act as a Wayfinder? (John 4:28)
John 4:28-29 NASB
28 So the woman left her water pot and went into the city, and *said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is He?”
NKJV: “Went her way into the city…”
NIV: “Went back to the town…”
The place we left in shame
As a church we value our city and its culture…
5. Why should I become a Wayfinder? (John 4:39-42 NASB)
John 4:39 NASB
39 Now from that city many of the Samaritans believed in Him because of the word
of the woman who testified, “He told me all the things that I have done.”
because people need something real to believe in.
because people need something worthy to worship.
John 4:20 NASB
“Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain…”
because people need healthy relationships.
John 4:40-42 NASB
40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they were asking Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of His word; 42 and they were saying to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this One truly is the Savior of the world.”
“Disciple making is relational. The woman shared and then Jesus spent time with them.” – Stan Coleman
