I talked to Press Secretary for the Office of the Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Youth, Johise Namwira. We talked about her family’s forced exodus because of the aftermath of the Rwandan massacre from the Democratic Republic of Congo to Kenya and eventually to Winnipeg, Canada, after her dads serendipitous meeting with a Mennonite couple, growing up in Canada with a strong cultural Congolese background, her complex relationship with her natural hair, earning her Karate black belt that led her to Japan to train with the prestigious Yagi family, her parents’ decision to not allow her to pursue her true passion for acting, attending Oxford University, going back to Congo to interview victims of sexual violence for her thesis which affects her to this day, microaggression, and working as a Press Secretary.
