Jesus Said, “It Is Written” – The Power of Standing on God’s Word

When Jesus faced the devil in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1–11), He didn’t argue, negotiate, or reason with temptation. Three times the enemy came with a lie, a half-truth, or a twisted promise—and three times Jesus answered with the same phrase: “It is written.”

Jesus didn’t say, “I feel like…” or “I think maybe…” or “The experts say…”

He said “It is written”—because the written Word of God is living, active, sharper than any double-edged sword (Heb 4:12), and it is the only weapon that never fails against the enemy’s schemes.

Why “It is written” is still our strongest defense today

  1. The Word is unchanging
  2. Culture shifts. Feelings fluctuate. Opinions evolve. But “the word of our God stands forever” (Isa 40:8). When everything around you is moving, anchor to what never moves.
  3. The Word is authoritative
  4. Jesus didn’t quote philosophers, psychologists, or trending voices. He quoted Scripture—because Scripture carries the full authority of God Himself. When you say “It is written,” you are not giving your opinion; you are declaring the decree of the King.
  5. The Word is offensive and defensive
  6. The sword of the Spirit (Eph 6:17) cuts through lies, exposes deception, and protects your mind and heart. Every time Jesus said “It is written,” the devil had no comeback. The same happens today.
  7. The Word must be in you to come out of you
  8. Jesus could say “It is written” because the Word was already hidden in His heart (Ps 119:11). You can’t quote what you don’t know. Fill your mind and mouth with Scripture so that in the moment of pressure, the Word rises up automatically.

Practical ways to make “It is written” your battle cry

Jesus showed us the playbook: the devil attacks with words, and we defeat him with the Word.

So the next time darkness presses in, accusation rises, or temptation knocks—don’t debate. Don’t despair.

Simply stand on the rock that never moves and say what Jesus said:

“It is written.”

And watch the enemy flee.

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7 (NIV)
