Description

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace took a lot of big swings, and many of them still hold up today. The visual effects and technical achievements remain impressive, especially considering when the film was made. George Lucas did a tremendous amount of world-building, expanding the Star Wars universe in ways that would influence countless stories that followed.

John Williams delivered some of his best work in the franchise, creating memorable themes that have become iconic parts of Star Wars. The casting is a mixed bag. Liam Neeson is an excellent addition as Qui-Gon Jinn, bringing wisdom and gravitas to the role. Natalie Portman, however, feels surprisingly underwhelming given her talent.

The podrace sequence remains a cinematic spectacle and is easily one of the film's highlights. Darth Maul and Emperor Palpatine (Sidious) are both compelling villains who leave a lasting impression despite limited screen time.

That said, Lucas also introduced plenty of questionable ideas, and that's before even getting to Jar Jar Binks. Still, The Phantom Menace isn't nearly as bad as its reputation suggests. At its best, it's a fun adventure filled with imagination, memorable characters, and exciting action, even if it occasionally slows down along the way.
