DaBaby released his new d.a. got that dope-produced song “Red Light Green Light” along with the music video today. The song’s music video, which DaBaby directed, pays homage to one of rap’s favorite movies, 1991’s Boyz n the Hood. Throughout the video, DaBaby sports a t-shirt with the film’s poster on it while they recreate iconic scenes from the film like the cookout and when Ricky gets shot. Although the lyrics to “Red Light Green Light” don’t refer to the movie, DaBaby has rapped about it in the past. On his 2019 song “INTRO”—which paid tribute to his late brother—he namedropped the movie rapping: And I still got a lotta sh-t on my mind that I can’t undecide (Yeah, yeah)
Got me ready to slide, feelin' like Doughboy when his brother died (Boyz n the Hood) Written and directed by the late John Singleton, Boyz n the Hood stars Ice Cube and Cuba Gooding Jr. The film helped Cube establish his foothold in Hollywood before he went on to become a full-blown movie star. The movie’s title also references Eazy-E’s “Boyz-n-the-Hood”—a song which Ice Cube helped write. DaBaby is just one of countless rappers to make mention of Boyz n the Hood. Everyone from Future to Kendrick Lamar to Rick Ross to The Game has made lyrical references to the movie, its characters, as well as specific scenes.
