Description

In 2014, Harriet Barnsley was hit by a car travelling 162km/hr whilst standing in a bus stop in Birmingham. She woke from a month-long coma to learn that she would need a wheelchair for life. Her oldest friend Rebecca had been killed at the scene. They were 21 years old.

Suffering from a traumatic brain injury, received 12 units (roughly 12 pints) of blood, and eventually learned all the parts of her body that were impacted.

The first five months in hospital was immensely painful. Not just from the brain injury, the broken bones, nerve injury and grief, but mainly because of an unusual phenomenon called ‘heterotrophic ossification’(HO). This is the term used for bone growth outside of the skeleton. Bones were growing throughout the muscle of her right hip, fusing it.

5 years post accident – Harriet developed mental health issues which included psychosis and a stays in mental health facilities.
