Welcome to Girl, Goodnight! In the inaugural episode, hear “The Two Offers”, written by Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.
The Two Offers is noted as the first short story written by an African American author to be published in the United States. It was published in the June and July editions of the Anglo-African Magazine in 1859. The story chronicles the lives of cousins Laura Lagrange; who is deciding between two offers of marriage, and Janette Alston; who becomes an old maid. Both women make decisions that will ultimately determine the direction of their lives, but were they best decisions?
