#4: On July 14, 2020, ViacomCBS ended a decades-long relationship with Nick Cannon. The company claimed he made anti-Semitic comments on his podcast "Cannon’s Class."
On the podcast, Cannon said Black people are the “true Hebrews.” He also talked about anti-Semitic conspiracy theories involving the Rothschild family.
“It’s never hate speech, you can’t be anti-Semitic when we are the Semitic people,” Cannon said. “When we are the same people who they want to be. That’s our birthright. We are the true Hebrews.”
In today’s episode Abdullah, Andres, and Justine discuss the subjects brought up by Cannon. The crew is surprised he was not also fired for insulting another group of people. But by the end of the episode, they are all surprised by the lessons learned through the discussion.
"The problem is that in the African American community for hundreds of years we have been trying to figure out the question of, 'What the heck happened that ended up with Black folks being at the bottom of the barrel?', " Abdullah begins to unwrap the discussion.
"This conversation is about the result of trauma," Andres continues the conversation. "This is the result of a group of people placed in a horrible situation. And you have to find a way to make this [life] have some kind of meaning."
There is some discussion about is anti-whiteness a thing and if so, is it the new anti-Semitism? Plus, Justine differentiates the historical criticism for those of European descent and anti-Semitism.
Finally, listen to how this Nick Cannon story is a model for the race conversation happening in the US.
