Quick! You’ve been invited to another holiday soiree – what are you going to wear? This
question just may strike fear in the hearts of many this season. The holidays can be
overwhelming enough, but add in multiple occasions for ‘holiday dress’ and it can be enough to
make you want to hide behind all the black pants hanging in your closet and wait until
December 26th.
Let me let you in on a few stylist secrets! First, dressing for the holidays can be easier than you
think! Instead of feeling that you need to run out and buy a brand new wardrobe, focus on a
few small pieces that can transform your most basic pieces into something fabulous!
Sometimes it’s the small things that can have a big impact, so focus in on those few pieces that
can work with what’s already in your wardrobe to transform it into something that’s perfect for
your next invite.
What’s great about the holidays is that most occasions call for what I like to call ‘Christmas
casual’. While you may have some dressier events, Christmas casual is perfect for open houses,
caroling, dinners with friends and many holiday parties. Focus your efforts here and you’ll
always have several go-to options when that unexpected invitation arrives!
1/ Three is the Magic Number
Adding in a third layer to a simple top and pants can be transformational and the power of the
third layer is a wonderful thing to tap into this time of year for an easy addition of both holiday
cheer, as well as warmth. But don’t wear just any old thing – try something that has some
pizzazz and panache. A faux fur vest, liquid leather jacket or blazer in holiday jewel tones can
be added to most tops already in your closet, as well as a few dresses, and will have you fielding
compliments left and right.
2/ Faux Real – Why not top your look off with a faux fur collar, wrap or jacket? Just adding this
simple piece over your top, dress or even your basic black coat can transform it into something
far more special. It elevates the most basic outfit and turns it into something special, making it
greater than the sum of its parts.
3/ All That Glitters – While jewelry that sparkles can add a lot to your look, why not try a top or
sweater with the bling already built in? Try a rhinestone-studded sweater with your best pair of jeans or trousers and booties and see how it can elevate your look in an instant! It brings light
to your face and makes you shine! Just add your fave bottoms and you’re set.
4/ Pop of Pink – Whether it’s blush, cranberry, fuschia or wine, adding a little pink is a chic and updated way to look festive. Pink has been a hot color for 2021 and its been all the rage for so
many reasons. Try it with your black, with camel or with winter white and gold for a gorgeous
and unexpected look! Blush faux fur, bright pink top under a jacket or a fabulous pink top is all
you need to look festive this season.
5/ Down Under – Why let the upper half of your body have all the fun? Swapping out your
basic jeans or black pants for something a little more festive can make your look Christmas
casual in no time flat! Try faux suede or coated jeans in black or a chic pattern for some serious
fun, or add in a pair of metallic printed pants to add a little sparkle to your ensemble.
Dressing for all your holiday events doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a few tricks up your
sleeve, your friends will wonder if you secretly have a stylist on speed dial!
