The Wisdom of SurrenderRelationships in Light of Eternity

The wisdom of God is found in surrender, not in control.

Act 1: The Futility of Control in Relationships

Scripture: Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 – “Two are better than one… A cord of three strands is not easily broken.” And, 4:4 – all toil and achievement spring from envy

Point 2: Surrendering to God’s Sovereignty in Relationships

Scripture: Proverbs 3:3-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Point 3: Wisdom in Relationships – Forgiveness, Patience, and Understanding

Scripture: Proverbs 17:9 – “Whoever would foster love covers over an offence, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.”

Proverbs 19:11 – “A person’s wisdom yields patience; it is to one’s glory to overlook an offence.”

Application:

If we’re not called to control or fix our relationships, what are we called to do? The wisdom of Proverbs gives us three concrete actions:

  1. Choose Forgiveness Over Retaliation: Proverbs 17:9 reminds us that wise people seek to preserve relationships by letting go of offences. Think about where you’ve been holding onto a grudge—how can you let that go this week? (PRAYERFUL SURRENDER)
  2. Practice Patience in Conflict: Proverbs 19:11 encourages patience and understanding. When you feel wronged, pause before reacting. Ask yourself, “Is this something I can overlook for the sake of peace?” (RELEASE THE NEED TO CONTROL)
  3. Foster Love Through Humility: In a world that values being right, wisdom means choosing love over pride. Let humility lead your interactions, prioritising the relationship over your own ego. (SEEKING WISDOM, NOT PERFECTION)
