Description

Drug Recovery Champion, and Masters student Luke Trainor is part of a pioneering programme to celebrate and support University of Birmingham students in recovery. Their goal is to inform and shape campus recovery nationwide. The programme, known as 'Better Than Well', offers peer-led support with students taking part in meetings to celebrate milestones, share concerns and build coping strategies. Additional activities include drop-in services, 'dry' social activities, sport and fitness, and opportunities for volunteering and service to the local community.

Luke at the age of 14 had been kicked out of his third secondary school in Birmingham and was already taking amphetamines, alcohol, and cannabis on a daily basis. The daily balancing act of getting that ‘Goldilocks’ combination of substances was not conducive to the setting of the modern urban comprehensive school. Luke was simply deemed a ‘problem’, ‘disruptive’ or ‘odd’.
