This episode discusses the ramifications "ableism". It is designed for promoting conversation about how ableism exists in schools and other organization.
The story is sort of a narrative designed to promote critical thinking.
It begins with a tale of two students with IEP's. Both students have different levels of motivation, interest, work ethics and behavior in school yet we cannot help notice that in this story one student is encouraged to be her best self while the other student is not being encouraged.
This story is not a true story, but a compilation of cases over my experiences in schools. It is not meant to be a generalization but for listeners to think about whether there are covert or hidden bias' that are associated with some disabilities and not others. While there are many more nuances in terms of ableism and how people react to persons with disabilities, this podcast is designed for listeners to be away of ableism and to consider terms such as microagressions, subtle power over, or direct aggression/exclusion of persons with disabilities. At the end of the podcast I refer to a committee meeting at my workplace, though names and places are disguised this was an actual event and the committee exists with the sole purpose of promoting equitable practices, opening up dialogues and promoting best practices in schools.
