Johnson was born on the 14th of July 1987 in Sunderland, in North East England. He rose to prominence in 2004 coming through the ranks at Middlesbrough making 96 appearances, significant transfers to Manchester City and Sunderland followed. In March 2015, Johnson was arrested and charged over sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl. One year later Johnson was found guilty of sexual activity with a child and sentenced to six years in prison.
