Description

The word "covenant" occurs 17 times in this chapter; a sign that this is the theme of this event in Abram's life. From this chapter onward, the people of God would be known as the children of Abraham, and through faith in Jesus, we are linked to the Patriarchs. When Jesus was born, Mary sang of this while pregnant: "He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever" (Luke 1:54-55). Similarly, John the Baptist's father, Zechariah, sang that God would send Christ "to show the mercy promised to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our father Abraham" (v. 72-73). Paul would later ground the salvation of Christians in the Abrahamic Covenant "And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise" (Gal. 3:29). Because it is vital for us to understand God's promises to Abraham, let's look carefully at how the covenant is confirmed in Genesis 17.
