Charlotte City Council member Tiawana Brown and her two daughters were indicted Thursday on federal charges for allegedly defrauding COVID-19 relief programs to obtain more than $124,000 in pandemic aid.
According to a release provided by the Department of Justice, Brown and her two daughters are charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud. WCNC Charlotte confirmed one of those loans, more than $20,000, was forgiven through the Paycheck Protection Program for a business Brown said she owned.
Brown released a statement Thursday morning, saying the alleged events happened years ago and have nothing to do with her time on city council.
