Description

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department unveiled a series of tributes to honor four law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty one year ago.

CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks, and N.C. Department of Adult Correction Investigators Alden Elliott and Samuel Poloche were killed on April 29, 2024.

"No singular act can fully honor such profound loss," said CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings in Saturday's announcement. "Instead, we have deliberately chosen multiple avenues to solemnly remember these fallen officers, to vibrantly celebrate their lives, to unite as a community in heartfelt tribute and to demonstrate the enduring strength that has defined us since that devastating day."

The four officers were killed during what became one of the deadliest days in Charlotte law enforcement history. On that day, members of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, which included officers from multiple agencies, were serving a warrant at a home on Galway Drive in east Charlotte when they were met with active gunfire from a suspect inside the house.

Eight law enforcement officers were injured in the ambush. Three task force officers — Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks and N.C. Department of Adult Correction Investigators William Elliott and Samuel Poloche — were pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after the shooting. CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer died later that night, according to CMPD statements at the time.
