The town of Wingate voted to dissolve its police department in a meeting on Tuesday.
Town leaders voted 4-1 in favor of the motion. The Union County Sheriff's Office will take over policing of the area.
The dissolution comes after a termination letter was sent to a Wingate police officer who beat brain cancer, sparking outrage in the town.
