Description

Welcome to Hail Media I'm Brian Wallace, MS Michigan Man 64, Left Tackle for Michigan Wolverines 1988-1991. This is where a former Wolverine gets real about life after football - battles you don't see coming and training that prepares us to take everything on!

Today I'm talking with David Lyons from California, diagnosed with MS in 2006 at the age of 47. David is a US Marine veteran and was a former bodybuilder and a health club owner when he started his journey. We have an awesome discussion about how he went from living a fast paced active life to having partial paralysis from his initial symptoms. David went through multiple tests and was tested for brain cancer trying to figure out what was causing his symptoms.

We talk about how he didn't understand MS and how he thought he had Muscular Dystrophy and how he was told he was going to be in a wheelchair in six months by his doctor.

Dave made the decision immediately he didn't want to take a drug so he dove deep into the exercise part of fighting the disease. It wasn't an easy road to go down and Dave talks about the year he spent shut down and how he shriveled up physically.

Dave actually started training again and competed in a bodybuilding competition after diagnosis but he learned that type of training wasn't good for his MS.

We talk about how Dave spent the next 15 years doing his own research on how to train his body in the best way possible to live his best life.

We talk about motivation and commitment when attacking anything in life especially being diagnosed with a chronic disease.

We talk about the program he developed with Matt Rowe, Optimal Body Optimal Mind, that lays out a plan of how to take care of your body and mind fighting the fight of chronic disease.

David Lyons is an amazing badass that understands what it's like living with this disease and has incredible knowledge he wants to share. Knowledge is power and ignorance is a choice!

FAM is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to mental health and assisting former Michigan team members with life's struggles after football, whether they are mental or physical. Division 1 football at the level we played it is brutal, and not all players come out of it in one piece. Visit www.michiganfootballalumni.org for more info and to make a tax-deductible donation.
