Description

Welcome to Hail Media I'm Brian Wallace, MS Michigan Man 64, Left Tackle for Michigan Wolverines 1988-1991. This is where a former Wolverine gets real about life after football - battles you don't see coming and training that prepared us to take everything on!

Today I'm talking with Ronald, diagnosed with MS in 2024 after symptoms like falling, slipping, and tremors. He was seen in February 2024 and diagnosed March 19th, 2024 with about 30 lesions found in his brain and spine. Here's the kicker - Ronald had been experiencing symptoms for almost 20 years and knew nothing about Multiple Sclerosis. He also has osteoporosis.

Ronald's husband Rod had a steep learning curve. Ronald went from using a walker in early 2024 to a power chair by year's end.

We talk about learning to accept that MS is with us every day and how Rod is learning to accept it too. They're using couples therapy to work through this life-changing curve ball - that's real relationship work right there.

We discuss mental health awareness, the loneliness and isolation that comes with this diagnosis, and how thankful Ronald is for connections he's made through this journey, like meeting Holly. We talk about the healthcare system and how different it can be region to region, MS specialists, Disease Modifying Therapy, and Ronald's experience with Ocrevus.

FAM is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to mental health and assisting former Michigan team members with life's struggles after football, whether they are mental or physical. Division 1 football at the level we played it is brutal, and not all players come out of it in one piece. Visit www.michiganfootballalumni.org for more info and to make a tax-deductible donation.
