Description

Welcome to Hail Media I'm Brian Wallace, MS Michigan Man 64, Left Tackle for Michigan Wolverines 1988-1991. This is where a former Wolverine gets real about life after football - battles you don't see coming and training that prepared us to take everything on!

Today I'm talking with Amber from Rhode Island, diagnosed with MS in 2022. She's also a mother to an autism warrior. Amber is an absolute fighter and badass managing both challenges.

Amber's diagnosis came during intense stress - moving back to her mom's house, struggling to find an apartment. She experienced numbness across her entire upper torso for a month, got dismissed by doctors who treated her like a pill chaser. Then came visual disturbances, severe headaches, and unequal pupils. After initially leaving the hospital due to wait times, she was eventually admitted when a nurse practitioner suspected a brain bleed. MRIs revealed MS, and she found out through her MyChart app - we both agree that's no way to deliver life-changing news.

We talk about why mental health counselors should be in the room when MS diagnoses are delivered. We discuss MS as an invisible disease, how stress triggers relapses, and the isolation that comes when people don't believe you're sick because "you look fine."

Amber also shares her fight getting her daughter's autism diagnosis and the crucial ABA services she needs.

We also want to call your attention to Football Alumni of Michigan - an organization that we care deeply about. Follow them here at ‪‪‪ ⁨@michiganfootballalumni⁩ . FAM is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to mental health and assisting former Michigan team members with life's struggles after football, whether they are mental or physical. Division 1 football at the level we played it is brutal, and not all players come out of it in one piece. Visit www.michiganfootballalumni.org for more info and to make a tax-deductible donation.
