Welcome to Hail Media I'm Brian Wallace, MS Michigan Man 64, Left Tackle for Michigan Wolverines 1988-1991. This is where a former Wolverine gets real about life after football - battles you don't see coming and training that prepared us to take everything on!
Today I'm talking with Eric from Texas and his wife Neomy. Eric, a lifelong athlete and runner, was diagnosed with MS in 2017 at 44 after waking up with numbness from knees to feet. His high school nickname was "Walkie Talkie" - he loved to talk. Now MS affects his speech, but Eric refuses to give up his voice.
We talk about why mental health is crucial - your brain never shuts off with this disease. We discuss Eric's progression from cane to walker to power chair, and how MS affected his esophagus and speech. Neomy shares her journey from hovering to giving Eric space to figure things out, and how she can now tell by looking at him if he's having a bad day.
Eric shares how the TikTok MS community helped him fight to keep his voice - a year ago he could barely speak, now he's talking for hours. We discuss his DMT Ocrevus and how after his last treatment his voice dramatically improved overnight. Neomy talks about their home health team, physical therapy, and how family moved in to help.
Eric's attitude: you have to fight mental, because this disease is a fight every day.

We also want to call your attention to Football Alumni of Michigan - an organization that we care deeply about. Follow them here at @michiganfootballalumni . FAM is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to mental health and assisting former Michigan team members with life's struggles after football, whether they are mental or physical. Division 1 football at the level we played it is brutal, and not all players come out of it in one piece. Visit www.michiganfootballalumni.org for more info and to make a tax-deductible donation.
