On this bonus episode of Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran welcomes friend and recurring guest Aaron Quinn (Cover 1) for the fourth of six weekly Buffalo Bills mock draft podcast episodes every Wednesday leading up to the actual NFL draft that begins April 29. This mock ultimately featured not one but two Buffalo Bills trade ups.
Before getting to the latest draft the guys spend a few minutes discussing what they learned from the previous three, with Patrick pointing out that getting an edge defender who you can count on being a strong contributor as a rookie isn’t going to be on the board at 30 and trading up would be a requirement. They also go over some realistic trade up scenarios in regards to what the cost would potentially be.
This draft begins and the guys land on pick No. 25 (Jacksonville) as a good trade up spot to target an edge they both like. However, Jacksonville rejects the offer and they’re “stuck” with the Bills keeping their pick at 30, leading to a guy ranked higher but who slipped due to injury concerns, Caleb Farley.
They do move up in round two, jumping up 14 spots to the Chargers pick to take an offensive lineman that Aaron considers a first-round talent. They pick the same defensive tackle (Tyler Shelvin) in the third round for the third time in four mocks.
They move up in the fifth round again, surrendering their seventh-rounder to move up five spots for a small school defensive end and wrap up with a sixth-rounder, a wide receiver from Clemson (Cornell Powell) they’ve taken previously.
This is a fun and informative exercise that’s teaching the guys a lot about the process and prospects that fit in certain situations.
