Hace mucho tiempo atrás en el medio oriente, Dios comunicaba mensajes para la nación de Israel. A este mensajero se le conocía como profeta.
A long time ago in the middle east God sent messages to the nation of Israel. The messenger was known as a prophet.
La nación de Israel fue derrotada por la nación de Babilonia y muchos de ellos fueron sacados de su tierra. Su templo saqueado, sus murallas quemadas y el pueblo en angustia deseaba ser libres una vez más.
The nation of Israel was defeated by another nation called Babylon and lot of Israelites were take our of their land. Their temple was looted, walls burndown and the people were sad, wishing for freedom once more.
Un día Dios le hablo a uno de sus mensajeros, el profeta Isaías. Y les envió un mensaje revelando el plan que Dios había preparado. El mensaje era el siguiente:
One day God talked to one of His messengers, Prophet Isaiah. And He sent a message, revealing Gods plan for them. The message was the following:
Porque nos ha nacido un niño, se nos ha concedido un hijo; la soberanía reposará sobre sus hombros, y se le darán estos nombres: consejero admirable, Dios fuerte, Padre eterno, Príncipe de paz. Se extenderán su soberanía y su paz, y no tendrán fin. Gobernará sobre el trono de David y sobre su reino, para establecerlo y sostenerlo con justicia y rectitud desde ahora y para siempre. Esto lo llevará a cabo el celo del Señor Todopoderoso.
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.
Este mensaje fue tomado con mucha esperanza. Nacerá un nuevo Rey, decían. Al fin seremos libres, anunciaban otros. Pero pasaron 10 años y no ocurrió nada. Otros 20 y la situación no mejoro. Cincuenta, cien años vieron pasar y la esperanza se fue. Esta era su realidad.
The message was taken with a lot of hope. A new king will be born, some said. We will be a last free, others shouted. But ten years went by and nothing happen. Another twenty and the situation did not get better. Fifty, a hundred years went by and hope started to fade away. This was their reality.
Setecientos años luego, el mensaje se había olvidado en las masas. Algunos escuchaban la historia y deseaban que se convirtiera en realidad en su tiempo, para obtener liberta de sus nuevos opresores, los romanos. Pero era algo improbable.
After seven hundred years, people had forgotten the message. Some listen to the story and wish for it to become real in their time, to be free of their new oppressor, the romans. But it was something unlikely.
A pesar de ser parte del imperio romano, la vida en Israel había tomado un poco de normalidad. El mercado estaba operando, el templo había sido restaurado para adoración. Los empleos como la pesca y ganadería estaban floreciendo nuevamente. Y un rey había sido puesto como supervisor de Roma sobre Israel llamado Herodes.
Regardless of now belonging to the roman empire, life in Israel had turn back to a more normal state. Markets were operating again; the temple had been restored for worship. Works in fishing and herding was starting to prosper again. And a king was put to supervise Israel for Rome named Herod.
Herodes envió un decreto, un pedido de parte del emperador romano Augusto Cesar, para tomar un censo. Un censo es contar cuantos niños, jóvenes y adultos hay un país. Y como podrás imaginar tomo mucho tiempo.
Herod sent a decree from the roman emperor Caesar Augustus, to take a census. A census es to count how many children, youth and adults are in a country. And as you can imagine, this would take a long time to be done.
Había en la ciudad de Belén un hombre llamado Jezron que tenía un negocio de ganadería. Su negocio se dedicaba principalmente al cuidado de ovejas para venderlas al templo en Jerusalén. Jezron tenía un hijo llamado Josías al que le encargo ser el supervisor de los pastores.
In the city of Bethlehem there was man named Hezron, whom was in the herding business. His business focus was sheep nurturing, to be later sold to the temple in Jerusalem. Hezron had a son named Josiah, whom he left in charge of the shepherds on the field.
Belén era generalmente un lugar tranquilo, sin mucho movimiento turístico. Marcado por hermosas represas conocidas como las piscinas de Salomón. Y estructuras amuralladas que traían paz a sus residentes, esta era conocida como la ciudad del Rey David, porque ahí él había nacido mucho tiempo atrás. Pero el censo había llenado la ciudad de gente que venía de muchas partes para ser contado como parte de la cuidad donde nacieron ellos o sus padres.
Bethlehem was generally a layback city, without a lot of tourism during the year. One of the more beautiful landmarks was a group of damps known as Salomon’s pools. The city walled structures brought peace to the residents of the city known as the city of King David, it was known like that because David was born there a long time ago. But the census had filled the city with people that came from many places to be accounted for in the city where they or their parents were born.
Josías luego de haber completado su registración en el censo y pagado sus impuestos regreso a la colina donde estaban sus ovejas y le comento a uno de sus pastores: ¿Puedes creer cuanta gente ha venido a Belén? Casi ni se puede caminar por las calles.
Josiah after finishing his own census registration and paid his taxes, he went back to the hill where he watches the sheep’s and he started talking to some of the shepherds: Can you believe how many people has come to Bethlehem? You can’t even walk through the streets.
Le comento uno de los pastores: el otro día fue a comprar pan y se había terminado. ¿Qué se creen estos extranjeros? Que se regresen de donde vinieron. Otro de los pastores se quejó: Yo fui a hacer la línea del censo y me tomo 4 horas. Mis calzados estaban llenos de arena, estaba caliente el sol y ni siquiera nos dieron algo de beber. ¡Injusto!
One of the shepherds said: the other day I went to buy bread and it was all gone. Who these outsiders think they are? They should go back to where they came from. Another shepherd started complaining: Yesterday I went to the census line and it took me four hours. My feet were full of sand, the sun was hot, and they didn’t even give us something to drink. Unfair!
Josías respondió: Ciertamente, ¿Por qué se le ocurrió a Augusto a hacer este conteo, no es suficiente con todo el dinero que ya nos saca? Si, si, protestaron los otros pastores.
Josiah replied: Truth, why would Augustus do this count, is not enough with the money he already takes? Yes, yes, complained the others.
Josías cambio el tópico momentáneamente y les pregunto, ¿Cuál es el reporte de anoche? Me comentaron que en el conteo de ovejas faltaban dos. ¿Qué fue lo que paso?
Josiah change the topic momentarily and asked, What’s last night report? I heard in the count we had two missing sheep. What happened?
Uno de los pastores le contesto: Anoche estaba en la guardia Obed y Uzías y ellos dijeron que una manada de lobos ataco la parte norte del rebaño. Ellos trataron de echarlos fuera, pero como no tenían más ayuda los lobos lograron tomar dos.
One of the shepherds replied: last night Obed and Uzziah were guarding the flock, and they said that a pack of wolves attacked the flock from the north side. They tried to make them go away, but they didn’t have enough help, so the wolves manage to take two of them.
¿Reforzaron las barreras? Les pregunto Josías. No, le contesto otro de los pastores, los constructores están ocupados haciendo reparaciones en las posadas, ya que están llena de huéspedes y no podrán venir a reparar las cercas hasta dentro de tres días.
Did somebody reinforce the barriers? Josiah asked. No, the other shepherds replied; the construction workers were busy making repairs in the inns, since is full of guests and they won’t be able to come and fix it for three days.
Entonces vamos a triplicar el número de pastores. Yo voy a estar aquí con ustedes. Ustedes encárguense de conseguir algunos pastores más para esta noche y armas en caso de que tengamos que enfrentarnos a esos lobos hoy. Yo regresare a encargar panes y peces para cenar esta noche en el campamento, contesto Josías.
Then let’s triplicate the numbers of shepherds. I will stay here with you. You are to find more shepherds for tonight and weapons in case we must fight the wolves tonight. I will go back to get bread and fishes for tonight dinner at the camp, replied Josiah.
Al regresar al centro de la ciudad, ya tarde, Josías fue a varios mercaderes, pero la comida se había agotado y encontró uno que apenas les quedaban unas 25 piezas de pan y unos 8 pescados. Y rápidamente le dijo: ¡Lo compro todo! El mercader empaco toda la comida, Josías pago el monto y preparo su burro para llevar la comida de regreso.
Back to the downtown, late in the day, Josiah went to multiples merchants, but the food was gone, and he found one that had about twenty-five pieces of bread left and eight fishes. Quickly he said: I want everything!The merchant packed all the food, Josiah paid and setup his donkey to take back the food.
Cuando comenzó a irse, sobre escucho a un hombre que con voz desesperante le regaba a un mercader si le quedaba algo de comer y conmovido por un momento, Josías se detuvo y lo llamo.
When he stared to leave, he overheard a man with a desperate voice was imploring to a merchant for something to eat and feeling compassion for a moment Josiah stop and called him over.
Toma, aquí hay unos panes y un par de pescados, dijo Josías. El hombre sorprendido por el acto de amabilidad intento pagarle, pero Josías no acepto el dinero. El hombre le agradeció y brevemente le explico que él y su esposa había viajado toda la noche y estaban buscando posada, pero al momento no había hallado una. Josías le recomendó una que era de un amigo de su padre y se marchó porque el sol estaba cayendo.
Here are some pieces of bread and a pair of fishes, take them, Josiah said. The man surprised by the kindness tried to pay him, but Josiah did not take his money. The man thanked him and briefly explained that him and his wife were traveling all night and were looking for an inn, but they haven’t found one at the moment. Josiah recommended one that belongs to his father friend and went on because the sun was setting.
Al llegar al campamento dentro del rebaño reunió a todos sus hombres y cenaron juntos.
When he arrived at the flock camp, he gathers all his men and eat together.
Luego de haber terminado la cena, Josías reunió a todos los pastores para formar un plan en caso de que los lobos regresaran. Eran 11 pastores, 12 en total contando a Josías.
After finishing dinner, Josiah gathered all the shepherds to plan in case the wolves came back. There were eleven shepherds, twelve in total with Josiah.
Josías comenzó a darle las instrucciones: Aram, Asa y Obed, ustedes van a estar en norte. Josafat y Farez ustedes en el lado este, Manases y Abiud ustedes cubrirán el oeste. Uzías y Aquin, ustedes estarán a la puerta del sur. El resto se quedará conmigo protegiendo el centro norte del campamento en caso de que Obed y el resto necesiten ayuda. Cada cual tome una daga, una antorcha y si necesitan asistencia griten su posición, ¿entendido? Y todos respondieron, sí.
Josiah started to give them the instructions: Ram, Asa and Obed, you guys will be in the north. Jehoshaphat and Perez, you guys will be in the east side. Manasseh and Abihud in the west, Uzziah and Akim in the south. The rest will stay with me protecting the mid north side of the camp in case Obed and the rest need help. Everyone take a dagger, lamp and if you need assistance shout your position, got it? And they answer yes.
En ese momento tomaron lo que necesitaban y cada cual se marchó a su posición asignada. Eran cerca de las ocho de la noche cuando todos se dispersaron. A eso de las once de la noche empezaron a escuchar aullidos a lo lejos. Pequeños sonidos los tenían algo nerviosos, pero alertas.
At that moment they took whatever they needed, and each went to their assign position. It was about eight at night when they separated. That night around eleven they started to hear howling from far away. Small sounds were making them nervous, but they stayed vigilant.
Los que estaban en el norte notaron alguna de las ovejas se despertaron y comenzaron a retroceder rápidamente. Obed y Aram comenzaron a observar cautelosamente hacia la dirección opuesta a la cual las ovejas estaban corriendo y cuando pasaron la antorcha en esa dirección la llama de fuego se reflejó en unos pares de ojo acechando en los arbustos.
Those who were in the north started to notice that some sheep were waking up and started to back off quickly. Obed and Ram started to observe carefully in the opposite direction to where the sheep were running, and as they move the torch in that direction, they saw the reflection of the fire in a pair of eyes lurking in the bushes.
Al ver eso Obed se hecho hacia atrás y Aram alerto a Asa para que diera la señal. Mientras Obed retrocedía lentamente con la antorcha alumbrado en esa dirección múltiples gruñidos comenzaron a sonar de múltiples direcciones. Aram saco su daga y se acercó a Obed, mientras Asa comenzó a dar gritos de alerta. ¡Norte, norte! Gritaba.
Seeing this, Obed stepped back and Ram told Asa to give the signal. While Obed was walking back slowly with the torch pointed in that direction, multiple growling started to be heard from different directions. Ram took out his dagger and got closer to Obed, while Asa started shouting. North, north!
Al Josías escuchar los gritos, alerto a los del sur e inmediatamente corrieron hacia la parte norte del rebaño. Mientras tanto en el norte al menos 5 lobos se atrevieron a hacerles frente a los hombres, aunque claramente podían ver que había más entre los arbustos. Los lobos poco a poco se acercaban acechándolos. Obed estaba moviendo la antorcha tratando de ahuyentarlos, pero no estaba funcionando. Aram y Asa hacían ruidos y tiraban piedras que encontraban en el suelo, pero aun así no lograban que retrocedieran.
When Josiah Heard the shouts, alerted the ones in the south and immediately started to run toward the north side of the flock. In the meantime, on the north at least five wolves dare to face the men, and it was clear there were more in lurking in the bushes. The wolves slowly started to get close to ambush. Obed was waiving the torch trying to scare them, but it wasn’t working. Ram and Asa were making noises and throwing rocks that they found laying in the ground, still they were not backing out.
Josafat y Farez llegaron del este y se unieron a intentar ahuyentarlos, a su vez arribo Manases y Abiud. Pero más lobos salieron de los arbustos, ladrando y gruñendo. De momento tres de los lobos lanzaron a atacar. Abiud le pego la antorcha a uno de ellos y salió corriendo encendido en llamas. Farez golpeo a uno con una roca y quedo un poco desconcertado. El tercero salto y le cayó encima a Obed, que arrojo su antorcha y logro poner su vara en la boca del lobo. Pero el lobo era más fuerte y estaba acercándose a su cara para morderle.
Jehoshaphat and Perez arrive from the east and join them trying to scare them away, then Manasseh and Abihud came too. But more wolves join them from the bushes, barking and growling. Sudently three wolves launched their attack, Abihud hit one with a torch and ran away lit up. Perez hit one with a rock and the wolf was disoriented. The third jump and landed over Obed, whom drop his torch and manage to put his staff inside the wolf mouth. But the wolf was stronger, and it was getting closer to bite his face.
Obed cerro sus ojos cuando de momento sintió todo el peso del lobo caer sobre él. Josías le dice, levántate. Cuando Obed abre los ojos, ve a Josías sacando su daga del lobo y Obed hecha el lobo al suelo. Los otros lobos al ver ese lobo en el suelo comenzaron a retroceder y los pastores empezaron a gritar más fuerte para ahuyentarlos. Hasta que finalmente se fueron.
Obed closes his eyes when he suddenly felt all the weight of the wolf landed over him. Josiah tell him to stand. When he opened his eyes, he sees Josiah taking out his dagger from inside the wolf and Obed pushed the wolf to the ground. When the other wolves saw the wolf in the ground they started to back off and the shepherds started to shout louder to scare them. Until they finally left.
Josías pregunto, ¿Alguien herido? A lo que todos respondieron, estamos bien.
Josiah asked, anyone injured? To what everyone replied, we are good.
Comenzaron a recoger las cosas y Josías ordeno poner el lobo fallecido fuera de la entrada norte para enterrarlo en la mañana. Era ya de madrugada cuando los lobos finalmente se habían marchado.
They started to pick their things and Josiah instructed them to put the deceased wolf outside of the north entrance to be burry in the morning. It was already early morning when the wolves left them.
Cuando cada uno se disponía a regresar a su puesto, un resplandor de luz vino del centro del campamento, tan brillante como el día mismo.
When they started to go back to their post, a bright light surrounded the middle of the camp, as bright as daylight.
¿Qué es eso? Dijo uno de ellos. No sé, pero viene del campamento, dijo otro. Vallamos a investigar, dijo Josías un poco temeroso.
What’s that? Said one of them. I don’t know but it is coming from the camp, said another. Let check it out said Josiah afraid.
Al llegar al campamento, quedaron rodeados por la luz y todos vieron como la figura de un hombre, pero era difícil distinguirlo por el brillo que había.
When they got to the camp, they were surrounded by the light and they saw the shape of a man, but it was hard to see because of the light.
Josías grito: ¿Quién eres y que quieres aquí? Cubriéndose el rostro, saco su daga y la apunto en la dirección de la persona que veía. Todos los demás pastores estaban detrás de Josías tratando de ver quien era mientras cubrían sus rostros con sus manos.
Josiah shouted: Who is it and what do you want? While covering his eyes, he pulls out his dagger and pointed in the direction of the person they were seeing. All the other shepherds were standing behind Josiah trying to see while covering their eyes with their hands.
De momento escucharon una voz: No tengan miedo. Miren que les traigo buenas noticias que serán motivo de mucha alegría para todo el pueblo. Hoy les ha nacido en la Ciudad de David un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor. Esto les servirá de señal: Encontrarán a un niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre.
Studently they Heard a voice: Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.
Los pastores totalmente confundidos, comenzaron a ver con más claridad según sus ojos se ajustaban. Cuando de repente la luz comenzó a disiparse y mirando hacia el cielo vieron una multitud de ángeles cantando la melodía más hermosa que ellos jamás habían oído: Gloria a Dios en las alturas, y en la tierra paz a los que gozan de su buena voluntad.
The shepherds were completely confused and stated to see more clearly as their eyes started to adjust. When suddenly the light started to disperse and looking towards heaven they saw a multitude of angels in the sky singing the most beautiful song they have ever heard: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
Luego que terminaron de cantar los ángeles desaparecieron del cielo y cuando miraron nuevamente frente a ellos el hombre había desaparecido también, al igual que resplandor que los rodeaba, solamente el fuego del campamento alumbraba aquel obscuro cerro.
After they finish singing, the angels disappear from the sky and when they look forward again the man that appear in from of them was gone, the light that was surrounding them too, only the fire of the camp was lighting up that dark hill.
Entonces Josías aun con el asombro dijo a los 11 pastores: Vamos a Belén, a ver esto que ha pasado y que el Señor nos ha dado a conocer. Y así como acordaron salieron hacia el centro de la ciudad.
Then Josiah still astonished said to the elven shepherds: Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.
Llegando a Belén cerca del amanecer, la ciudad estaba en silencio. Y los pastores se preguntaron hacia donde tenían que ir. Mientras caminaban vieron la luz de una estrella cruzándose con el primer rayo de sol sobre el establo de la posada del amigo del padre de Josías. Josías exclamo: ahí es. Los demás lo miraron con duda y un de ellos dijo: ¿Cómo va a haber un niño acabado de nacer ahí? Preguntemos alrededor. Pero Josías ya había entrado al establo, así que le siguieron.
Arriving to Bethlehem close to dawn, the city was silence. The shepherds started to question where they were supposed to go. While they were walking, they saw a light coming from a star cross with the first ray of sunlight over a stable in his father’s friend inn. Josiah exclaim there it is.The others looked at him doubtful and one of them said: how is that the place a child was born? Let ask around.But Josiah already had entered the stable, so they followed him.
Al entrar entre los animales Josías vio, tal y como el hombre que estaba en la luz les había dicho. “Encontrarán a un niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre.” Y Josías cayo de rodillas en asombro.
Going in between the animals Josiah saw, just at the man in the light had said, you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. And Josiah fell to his knees amazed.
Los demás pastores entraron y vieron a Josías de rodillas, a un hombre y una mujer. Cuando vieron al niño en el pesebre quedaron sorprendidos y sin palabras.
The other shepherds came in a saw Josiah in his knees, a man and a woman. When they saw the child in a manger they were surprised and speechless.
La mujer les pregunto ¿quiénes son? Pero ninguno contesto. Entonces el hombre miro a Josías y le dijo a su esposa: Este es el hombre del que te conté, el que me dio los panes y peces la tarde anterior. La mujer lo miro y le dijo: muchas gracias, estamos en deuda con usted.
The woman asked, who are you? But none of them answered. Then the man saw Josiah and said to his wife: this is the man I told you about, he gave me the bread and the fishes yesterday. The woman looks at him and said: thank you, we are in your debt.
En ese momento Josías reconociendo al hombre, pero todavía sorprendido dijo: No me deben nada, yo soy el que les debo las gracias. El hombre y la mujer lo miraron confundidos.
At that moment Josiah recognized the man but was still in surprised and he said: you don’t owe me anything, I’m the one that should be thanking you. The man and the woman looked at him confused.
Josías al ver sus caras continuo: Lo siento mucho, tal vez no hago sentido. Permítanme explicar. Esta noche estuvimos cuidando el rebaño de ovejas de mi padre. Y mientras protegíamos a nuestras ovejas una luz ilumino todo el campamento y un hombre con el aspecto de ángel nos dijo que encontraríamos a este niño tal y como lo vemos.
When Josiah saw their faces keep talking, I’m sorry, maybe I don’t make sense. Let me explain. Last night we were guarding my father’s sheep Flock. And while we were protecting the sheep a light came over our camp and a man looking like an angel said that we would find this child just as he is now.
Pero eso no es lo más maravilloso. También nos dijo que este niño el mesías que nuestros antepasados profetizaron que liberaría a Israel. El salvador del mundo a nacido.
But that’s not the most amazing thing. He also told us that this child is the Messiah that our ancestor foretold it would free Israel. The worlds savior has been born.
Mientras Josías contaba la historia, el administrador de la posada y algunos de los siervos fueron a ver como estaba la mujer que había venido embarazada. Al escuchar esa historia todos se maravillaron. Y todos los pastores detrás de Josías se postraron y adoraron al niño que estaba en el pesebre, mientras los empleados y los padres observaban sin palabras.
While Josiah was telling the story, the inn manager and some servants came to see how the pregnant woman they let stay was. When they heard the story, they were astonished. Then all the shepherds kneel behind Josiah and worshiped the child that was in the manger, while the inn employees and the parents watch without words.
Cuando terminaron de adorar, la mujer sonrió y les dijo: que el Señor este con ustedes. Entonces los pastores se levantaron y Josías dijo: Dios ya está con nosotros. Luego de eso los pastores se marcharon.
When they finished worship, the woman smiles and said: May the Lord stay with you. Then the shepherds stand up and Josiah said: God is already among us. After that the shepherds left.
Mientras salía comenzaron a cantar juntos el mismo canto que presenciaron esa noche: Gloria a Dios en las alturas, y en la tierra paz a los que gozan de su buena voluntad.
While they were leaving, they started singing together the same song the witnessed that night: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.
Y Josías fue lleno de esperanza, porque el salvador había llegado al mundo. Fin
Josiah was filled with hope, because the savior of the world has finally come. The End.
