There were so many factors that made the 1994 World Cup a success. Great marketing. Success on the pitch for the US Men's National Team. And, importantly, a roster full of personalities to whom America could uniquely connect. There's probably no better example of that than Alexi Lalas. The larger-than-life personality looked like a rock star with long red hair, and became indispensable for his play on the field as well.
Lalas, now a broadcaster for Fox Sports, joined Founding Futbol to talk about how he combined his love for music with soccer and considered himself an entertainer, first, on the field. He also shares memories from his time at Rutgers, how he progressed to the USMNT, what it was like playing in the 1994 World Cup and how he transitioned into broadcasting.
Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America.
