In this episode of Unexpected Turns, host Laura Wilcox has a conversation with Kate, whose musical education and dreams took a major detour when she suddenly began to experience a stuck larynx and voice changes. Although she had believed in Christ in childhood, her identity was focused on her vocal performance.
As Kate faced an uncertain career future, she also grieved the loss of her mother and her singleness into her 40s. In despair, she wept what she called "ugly tears," crying out to God like a toddler throwing a tantrum. And although God did not restore her voice for a long time, she did experience the reality of his presence beside her in her despondency.
Kate thought her resume was destroyed, but instead she found opportunities to teach children. As she danced and played with children, her pride weakened. Her music education work actually enhanced her resume.
Kate continued to deal with an element of shame in losing her former voice. She has been greatly encouraged by insights gained through the resource Singing Through Change, which explores new research on the effects of hormones and menopause on women's voices and ways to strengthen their voices during aging.
Today, Kate is thankful that God has redirected her sense of identity and value from her voice to her status as a beloved daughter of the King for whom Jesus died.
