In this episode, Cindy Esliger asks ‘What if work could actually be fun?’ She’s talking about finding room satisfaction, creativity, and fun in our careers instead of simply viewing work as an endless, stressful grind keeping us from the weekend. When we make work more enjoyable and better suited to us, we reduce our stress, protect our spark, and perform better as well. It may sound like a radical mindset shift, but Cindy walks us through exactly how to approach it.
If all we’re doing at work each week is just trying to make it to Friday, or to retirement, we’re basically postponing our lives. There’s more to work than just surviving it. There is room for joy to help offset the stress we’re under. Cindy describes exactly what stress does to our body, a physical stress response, and our feelings, an emotional stress response, and then offers us four ways to interrupt the stress spiral before it takes over: 1. Close our eyes and reopen them slowly, 2. Yawn on purpose, 3. Move our bodies, and 4. Label what’s happening.
There are a hundred little ways to inject personal satisfaction or creativity into our tasks at work. Where can we find moments of joy? Cindy shares three tiny joy experiments to test what brings more lightness to our day: 1. Work with people we like, 2. Tweak a task to reflect our creativity or skills, and 3. Insert our perspective into a process. We need to find ways to better manage our stress and resent our jobs less. Cindy assures us that we are allowed to find our spark again and inject it into our careers; in fact, we should.
