To celebrate the 100th edition of the show Red is joined by an author whose books on landscape, nature, place, people and language have won international acclaim, and helped bring the conversation about man’s relationship with the natural world into our everyday lives.
Regarded by many as the outstanding nature writer of his generation, Robert Macfarlane continues that conversation in his latest book, Is a River Alive? Through its pages he invites us to reframe our view of rivers, to see them as living entities with intrinsic value and rights that should be protected, rather than merely natural resources to be exploited.
Guided by this idea, he journeys from the cloud forests of Ecuador to the polluted waterways of south India, and the wild waters of Quebec’s Mutehekau Shipu, or Magpie River, examining how different cultures and movements are redefining rivers as entities with life, history, and legal rights, and arguing that our fate is bound up with the health and recognition of rivers.
