Written during the pandemic, this work reflects on the global turmoil and personal connections to Ukraine, with inspiration from a poem by Ilya Kaminsky. Mathew also discusses his creation of Beyond: Microtonal Music Festival at University of Pittsburgh. It is a biennial event that celebrates the musical notes "in between the notes". He gives a sneak peek into the exciting lineup for the February 2025 festival, featuring Georg Vogel's microtonal Dsilton Jazz ensemble, Ellen Fullman's Energy Archive, and works by local composers exploring microtonality's rich history and future.
