Mathew first discusses his most latest collection of compositions, We Lived Happily During the War. Written during the pandemic, this work reflects on the global turmoil and personal connections to Ukraine, with inspiration from a poem by Ilya Kaminsky. Mathew highlights how this pieces has evolved over time, and its impact on contemporary society. He guides us through the pieces that are available on YouTube.
Mathew also discusses his creation of Beyond: Microtonal Music Festival at University of Pittsburgh. It is a biennial event that celebrates the musical notes "in between the notes". He gives a sneak peek into the exciting lineup for the February 2025 festival, featuring Georg Vogel's microtonal Dsilton Jazz ensemble, Ellen Fullman's Energy Archive, and works by local composers exploring microtonality's rich history and future.
