In this episode, Jim Cunningham spoke with Cantor David Reinwald from Temple Sinai in Squirrel Hill about two events coming up. Cathy Mansfield, an attorney, composer, and scholar, will be screening her new opera The Sparks Fly Upward, with a lecture beforehand about the Nazi's rise to power in Germany.
Cantor Reinwald discuss Cathy's background, the intersection of law and music, and how Cathy's opera uses music and historical documents to tell its story. The story of the opera follows the journey of two Jewish families during the Holocaust. Cantor Reinwald also connects the opera to Holocaust-era composers and the importance of keeping their stories and music alive. They both talk about how accessible the opera is, and the music behind it.
Cantor Reinwald also discusses his own research into the Holocaust during his time as a student.
You can see Cathy Mansfield give her lecture on Nazi's rise to power in Germany on Thursday, January 23rd at 7 pm at Temple Sinai, with the screening of The Sparks Fly Upward on Saturday, January 25th at 6 pm. Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Cathy and Mendelssohn Choir Director, Daniel Singer.
