Welcome to the first episode of our podcast, where we delve into stories of setbacks and comebacks. I'm Miss Jeanine, a mother of three incredible millennials and Gen Z girls. Today, I want to share my journey with you, which led me from the heart of Africa to pursue my dreams in Belgium, and, finally, to the United States.
Growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country plagued by war, I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of conflict. The unimaginable horrors, such as the use of rape as a weapon of war, forced millions of people, to flee their homeland. However, the Congo is also known for its vast mineral resources, which play a role in the technology we use every day.
In 1991, I left my beloved Congo to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse in Belgium. Against my father's wishes for me to become a doctor, I followed my heart and attended nursing school. Though undervalued in Africa at the time, nursing was my passion, nurtured by childhood play and a fascination with caring for others. After completing nursing school, I immigrated to the United States in 1997, armed with determination but without a grasp of English.
My journey in the U.S. was filled with challenges, setbacks, and moments of despair. I recall a time when I faced false accusations while working at a nursing home in Chicago. Despite my innocence, I was suspended and unable to defend myself effectively. This was just one of the storms I weathered along the way.
However, through resilience, faith, and unwavering hope, I not only overcame these obstacles but also went on to achieve remarkable milestones. From mastering English to becoming a registered nurse, an entrepreneur in Africa, and even a published author of books in both French and English, my journey has been one of transformation.
