Sweet Samara is a short documentary, directed by Divad Durant, that follows Jalal Sabur, a Black farmer, at the Sweet Freedom Farm in Germantown, New York. The film explores Mr. Sabur’s mission to use maple syrup as a tool or symbol for abolition, drawing historical parallels between syrup and the fight against slavery—when it was promoted as an alternative to sugar produced through enslaved labor. The film further explores themes of climate justice and abolition through a poetic and visually arresting narrative through the making and process of pure, sweet maple syrup. Sweet Samara is available for viewing right now on Black Public Media’s AfroPop Digital Series on their YouTube channel or click on the link below to see the film in its entirety.
