This is how my guest for this weekβs Legal Lens show describes the Section 14 area of Palm Springs, CA.
This was once a thriving community until a series of forced removals by the City of Palm Springs in the 1950s - 1960s, which took place with little or no notice, and sometimes destroyed houses with personal belongings inside.
The Section 14 area of Palm Springs is a one-mile stretch of desert east of downtown Palm Springs, owned by the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, now home to the tribeβs namesake hot spring, which is central to the tribe's traditional life and attracted the desertβs first wellness resorts in the 1880s.
Today, the land holds a sprawling casino, hotels, condos and the Palm Springs Convention Center.
My KBLA TALK 1580 fellow host and Civil Rights Attorney Areva Martin represents a number of Black and Latino former residents as they seek city reparations and she joined me in the KBLA TALK 1580 studio to help us better understand the history, the context and legal implications of the case.
To listen to our live show, tune in every Saturday @ 11 AM PT & Sunday @ 1 PM PT on kbla1580.com and on the KBLA TALK 1580 app. Weβve got a lot to talk about!
