With the craft distilling boom tightening its grip throughout Europe and around the world, Mackmyra looks increasingly like an old stager, having fired up its stills for the first time as long ago as 1999. This is whisky with a distinctly Scandinavian accent, gaining its smoke from a combination of peat and juniper, and employing the local Swedish oak in its maturation. Meanwhile, Spirit of Hven offers something similarly idiosyncratic – Sweden’s first island malt, located as it is on Hven (or Ven) in the Öresund Strait between Sweden and Denmark.
