Fort Delaware, on Pea Patch Island in the middle of the Delaware River, was once one of the Civil War’s most notorious Union prison camps, and today, it’s one of the most haunted sites on the East Coast. Thousands of Confederate POWs died there from disease, exposure, and despair, leaving behind a legacy of suffering that locals say never really left the island.
