Historically speaking, since the church's inauguration, it hasn't been a matter of when the people of God will suffer. The well-known story of Daniel's three friends' refusal to bow down to Nebuchadnezzar's statue in Daniel 3 helps us prepare for inevitable persecution. We need to expect it, do not fear, be brave, and rejoice that we are counted as worthy to share in Christ's sufferings.
