Penn State football has the opportunity to grow over the next month, with a January 1st Outback Bowl game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. With the ability to practice over the next three weeks, the Nittany Lions are focusing on player development of their underclassmen to help the team prepare for the future. So which players stick out to Senior Editor Nate Bauer? That’s what he and host Thomas Frank Carr discuss on the BWI Daily Edition. They start by focusing on the offensive players that Bauer highlighted this week.
Before getting to that, Bauer and T-Frank talk about Penn State redshirt senior Des Holmes and his decision to enter the transfer portal. While the news is not surprising, it provides an opportunity to look at the offensive line and the depth issues that Penn State experienced this year.
With the news of Holmes exiting Penn State via the portal, the offensive line is a natural entry point to the conversation about young players that need to develop. Freshman lineman Landon Tengwall played well in limited snaps at the end of the season, and he’s the first player T-Frank and Bauer highlight on the show. They discuss how Tengwall played, his potential fit on the offensive line, and the jigsaw puzzle of putting an offensive line together to get the best out of the group. His development and where Tengwall fits in the future will be crucial keys to understanding what Penn State’s offensive line will look like in 2022.
They also discuss one other name along the offensive line and what that player’s future might hold.
Next up is redshirt freshman receiver Malick Megia, who was instrumental in a win over Rutgers late in the season. With only a limited number of snaps and targets, what can you take away from his season? Is the arrow pointed up for Meiga? Bauer gives his thoughts on why you should. On the flip side, T-Frank provides a cautionary tale about extrapolating a small sample size into a complete player profile.
Next, the duo discusses the essential developmental underclassmen in quarterback Christian Veilleux. What should you take from his performance against Rutgers? Could Veilleux play in the bowl game? T-Frank and Bauer go back-and-forth on the topic of quarterback preparedness.
Finally, the conversation naturally develops into one about the future of the position and the real potential of Veilleux to play next season if Sean Clifford elects to return to the Nittany Lions.
