The BWI Daily Edition is back with their weekly mailbag show. This week, Penn State football had big news with spring football starting, a new NIL collective launching, and Pro Day on Thursday. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer cover all of that and more thanks to questions submitted by the audience.
They start and spend most of the time on the show, dedicated to discussing the Success With Honor NIL collective, launched on Wednesday. Bauer explains how this collective differentiates from other collectives that exist already and its intended goals.
T-Frank and Bauer then discuss a wide range of aspects that affect the NIL landscape, including where it places Penn State in the landscape of college football, the impact of these collectives, and the ethics behind them.
After that, Bauer and T-Frank shift to questions about the Penn State roster for this spring. First, where is Amin Vanover playing, and is that a good fit for him? T-Frank thinks that Penn State made the right decision for the defensive lineman in his placement this spring and explains why. Next, a listener wants to know how Penn State found itself with such a numbers crunch at offensive line and linebacker. Is that the case, though? Bauer and T-Frank have an extended conversation about linebacker, its evolving nature, and how Penn State views the position. Finally, they touch on the offensive line and the bad timing issues that led to a lack of depth this spring.
Next, two BWI Lions Den members want to know about Penn State players making the transition to the NFL. Which less-notable player in Penn State's draft class has a chance of finding their way into Day 3? And what's the best fit for Jahan Dotson at the next level? First, Bauer gives his thoughts about what each of Eric Wilson, Derrick Tangelo, and Ellis Brooks brings to the table. After that, T-Frank provides a scouting report of each player and then describes the best system fit for Dotson in the NFL.
Two of the final four questions deal with freshmen on the Penn State roster. First, when coaches talk about getting players "reps," what does that mean? Regarding players getting reps, is first-year receiver Kaden Saunders more important than five-star running back Nick Singleton in their first season? T-Frank and Bauer explain the first and then discuss the second question.
Finally, one viewer wants to know how Penn State handles scouting the transfer portal. T-Frank and Bauer discuss how that has happened at Penn State before explaining that it might be changing due to staff additions. Lastly, a listener asks a familiar question about starting quarterback Sean Clifford.
