False kidnapping accusations are rare, but do occur. And when they do, they cause a ripple effect that damages not only the immediate community but the world as a whole by taking away time, resources, and attention from actual victims. Such is the case of Sherri Papini, who made news in 2016 for disappearing shortly after Halloween of that year. However we now know most of her claims were false and her tale has some bizarre connections to the 20-year-old cold case of Tera Smith.
