I looooove playing B.O.C, and I love playing the opening set even more. The eager ears and feet surround you, waiting for you to give them a sweet release they've been waiting for. But for me it almost didn't happen this year!
Do you remember your excitement as a child, waiting for the day when you would open your Christmas presents? Getting the email about your B.O.C. DJ spot is a close second. 34 DJs around San Francisco were foaming at the ears. We'd all been told we would play, but at what time? which room? Was I going to play a zipper-core set inside, orbig-gay-haus outside?
The lineup came out on Dec 27th, and I didn't get a present. No slot for me -- how could this be? I poked Andrea Loinstar about not having a box to unwrap. "WTF! STFU! NO WAY! GTFO!" was the immediate response. Somehow in all the planning I'd fallen off the roster. Luckily in 5 minutes she made everything right again. The Cowboys decided to open up the outside an hour earlier and I would take theopener slot. I went from having no present at all to having the biggest one under the tree -- I love opening at B.O.C.
This set perfectly captures the mood of my morning -- slowly breaking the crowd in with some beautiful melodic Deadmau5, ramping up with some soulful house and funky breaks, and finally peaking with some classic breakbeats from 2003.
A hearty thank-you to Kevin Wardell for shedding his blood on the conga drums, to the dancers up front for getting the crowd all worked up, to Zach Moore for capturing it all & providing tech support (and beer!), and to the Space Cowboys for throwing the best party of the year. - Trav
