During the first week of COVID quarantine, in her New York City house, Maya Beiser had a dream where Billie Eilish met Beethoven and was trying to teach him how to dance. In the delirium of quarantine, she decided to create a multitrack cello single that juxtaposes the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony with Billie Elish/Finneas' Bad Guy. the single is a collaboration with Evan Ziporyn who composed and co-produced the single with Maya during remote quarantine sessions from her home studio.
Hailed for her “stirring emotional power” by The New York Times, Maya Beiser has been called a “cello rock star” by Rolling Stone, praised as “a force of nature” by The Boston Globe, and dubbed “the queen of Avant-garde cello” by the Washington Post.
Maya is a featured performer on the world’s most prestigious stages including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, BAM, The Kennedy Center, BBC Proms, London’s Southbank Centre, Royal Albert Hall and the Barbican, Sydney Opera House, Barcelona’s L’auditori, Paris’ Theatre de La Ville, Stockholm’s Concert Hall, and in major venues and festivals across five continents.
Among the wide range of artists she has collaborated with are Philip Glass, Louis Andriessen, Erin Cressida-Wilson, Brian Eno, Shirin Neshat, Steve Reich, Lucinda Childs, Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe, Mark Anthony Turnage, David Lang, Bill Morrison, and Wendy Whelan.
Her most recent release, “Bowie Cello Symphonic: Blackstar” – a reimagination of David Bowie’s last album – debuted at the number 2 spot on the iTunes classical chart, topped the Billboard Classical Crossover chart, and received rave reviews.
