This EP was inspired by the sudden loss of vocalist/song-writer Justin Joseph James' father in the winter of 2016 & the subsequent depression & changes he went thru trying to make sense of & deal with this tragedy.
"These songs are meant to capture my father's memory in sound.. A record of who he really was, faults & finer points, everything that made him uniquely Darren Devaney. He never found it inside to leave any legacy for himself so this is my attempt at making one for him & to give those who never got to know him, a chance to do so through our shared experiences.
Although, it is extremely difficult to remain objective about one's family, especially our parents; I did my best to not either idealize or demonize him to any extent and show an unbiased view into the life & loss of someone I love dearly. This obviously made the lyric writing process a bit of it's own mountain to navigate as the rose-colored lens of nostalgia tempts us to portray the dead as either saints or devils to serve as examples for those of us still blessed with the gift of life. I wanted my father's life to serve as an example to remember that time is fleeting and we never when we will get called over to the otherside.. thus the title of the EP 'Memento Mori' - 'remember, you will die' & that there is no time but the present to make a name & life for yourself.
Tomorrow may never come, but you have to hope that it does. This is the small light my father left behind for me; I hope with this EP I can start to share it with those in need until it grows and reaches everyone who yearns for a little illumination in a world of darkness, death & unknown sorrows."
