The City of Austin is working to improve access to support services for families in public housing. KUT’s Syeda Hasan reports.
More than 19,000 people live in Austin’s public housing developments, and the city wants to help more of those residents become economically independent. The Housing Authority of the City of Austin recently received a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development totaling more than $236,000. Pilar Sanchez, the group’s Vice President of Housing Operations, says the funds will go toward connecting residents with services like GED classes and job placement.
“It allows us to bring the best community organizations that help the most vulnerable citizens of Austin,” Sanchez says.
The idea is to provide residents with opportunities for advancement. She says the funds will allow the Housing Authority to work each family for at least three years.
