Ride hailing companies Uber and Lyft announced in May that they would leave Austin because they didn't want to comply with new requirements to do a fingerprint background check on their drivers. Just days later, State Senator Charles Schwertner of Georgetown announced he would make ride hailing regulations a priority in the 2017 legislative session. KUT's Ben Philpott reports lawmakers have taken a first step toward new legislation.
