In honour of our upcoming pair of shows at Summercamp in Chillicothe, IL this week's #ThisDealInHistory is pulled from our July 30, 2005 concert at Chicago's Metro. This show was part of the Wicker Park Festival and, if memory serves me correctly, was a very-late-night set.
The set starts out with our homage to the band Chicago (something we tried to do at every Chicago-area gig that we ever played) with an impromptu version of their 1976 hit "If You Leave Me Now". Darren's exclamation at the end of the piece says it all, in my opinion.
"Gone Gone Gone" is the focus of this clip. I like the tempo and the vibe of the middle jam - sometimes we would throw on the afterburners and ramp up the speed in the first section of the jam but we kept it at a steady tempo, which provided a sexier vibe there.
Around 4:30 i throw a cue/trigger in to suggest that we speed it up and raise the intensity, which we do in spades.
I'm a big fan of the groove Darren throws down at 5:30 with the shaker and the hi-hats poking out here and there.
I also love the abrupt shifts into the shots, etc. - we've been doing that more nowadays and i'm always smiling when that stuff happens. Expect more of that stuff as time moves on. Sometimes we're groovin' so hard that i forget to call that stuff!
After we call (and play) the "Gone Gone Gone" shots, we take it down for a minute to an ambient Rhodes-led jam, where i once again reference the Chicago song "If You Leave Me Now", but this time in a minor key, then it's off to the ending section and out... probably around 4:45 AM -Jamie
