Throughout time, man’s destiny has been shaped by the search for the elusive spices coveted by nobility and royalty. The history of the spice trade reveals titillating tales of piracy, astounding adventures and fierce wars battled to control the spice trade. Exotic myths arose in explaining the astronomical costs of spice treasures. Our speakers, Patty and Tom Erd, have spent their lives in pursuit of the highest quality spices from across the globe. They will share savory facts, anecdotes and spicy tales of daring do.

BIOGRAPHY: Tom and Patty Erd, are second generation “spiceperts.” They began their savory ascent when Patty's parents, Ruth and Bill Penzey, Sr., retired from their nationally acclaimed Spice House in 1992. The city of Milwaukee was the original home of The Spice House, which just celebrated its 62nd anniversary. Patty and Tom opened their second shop in Evanston, followed by Old Town and their most recent opening came this June at Navy Pier. Food and Wine Magazine honored The Spice House by including them in their list of Top Spice Shops in The World .
